Tips for Dry Skin

Dry skin has numerous causes. Some people are born with it and it persists throughout life. It can be uncomfortable, incessantly irritable and desire to scratch is always present. The more it is scratched, the greater becomes the irritation and desire to repeat the process. It gives no lasting reliefs.

Aging people normally tend to have increasingly less secretions of tiny oil producing glands of the skin (Sebaceous glands). Therefore, there is a tendency for their skin to dry out, becoming irritable and uncomfortable. Besides it tend to lose elasticity can evoke considerable discomfort.

Some environments can predispose to a drying out of the skin. Also, certain illness can cause the skin to become abnormally dry. Any persisting dry skin should receive proper investigation by the physician.

Treatment:
1. Care in washing
- Avoid excessive washing- This tends to further dry out the already dry skin.
- Avoid the use of soaps as much as possible. These are generally alkaline and are quite harsh to the sensitive skin, tending to make it dryer than ever.
- Avoid undue drying medication.
- Avoid excessively hot or dry climates if possible.

2. Application
- Fat-Based applications to the skin often assist.
- Apply when is still moist. Lanoline is excellent.
- Coconut butter, liquid paraffin, petrolatum and other simple ointment are helpful.

3. Thick, dry, cracked skin
Sometime the skin in certain areas become hard, thick and dry and may be cracked. A common site is the heel. The fingers in aged persons may also be similarly affected, becoming quite painful and bleeding.

Vitamin A in a suitable ointment applied liberally and often, frequently produces excellent results after it has been used for some time. It must be preserved with in conjunction with the other general measures noted earlier. If an effective result does not occur within several weeks it is worth having a medical check from the physician. Sometimes chemical toxins can cause skin thickening. These need medical examination and tests.

Treating High Cholesterol: How to Increase HDL Levels

Today I will talk about methods for reducing high cholesterol by increasing level of high density lipoproteins (HDL), or "good" cholesterol. You can find out more about HDL in my previous post 5 Facts About Cholesterol. Let me remind you that HDL is known as a "transport" for excessive cholesterol back from other parts of the body to liver. HDL can actually even remove some of the cholesterol that is already attached to the artery walls by low density lipoproteins (LDL). But, very high levels of HDL are not good either. So, it is very important keeping your HDL level under control. Please, note, when you should start reducing high cholesterol by increasing your HDLs:

- For men: if your HLD level is less than 40 mg/dL (or 1.0 mmol/L)
- For women: if your HDL level is less than 50 mg/dL (or 1.3 mmol/L)

Your doctor will be right by saying – “Change lifestyle, eat healthier food, more positive emotions and you’re good!”

So, what does it actually mean? Let’s follow simple steps towards reducing high cholesterol levels with the help of more HDL.

Healthy diet is a MUST!

This includes avoiding any overcooked meats, foods that contain saturated and trans fats, high carb and fats food, inadequate dietary antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Healthy fats, like unprocessed vegetable oil, along with plenty of antioxidants will keep your lipoprotein particles fresh and circulating normally. There are two kinds of diet which both help raising your HDL – low-carb diet and low-fat diet. I will focus on these two in my next posts.

Exercise

Even moderate exercises each day can help raising your “good” cholesterol because they raise your heart rate and thus blood flow improves. Try adding daily walk during your lunch hour, 10 minutes physical activity several times a day. For more intense exercises consider 30 to 60 minutes a day of riding your bike, swimming, playing favorite sports, etc. Experts say that the duration of exercise rather than the intensity is the more important factor in fighting high cholesterol.

Loose extra weight if you have some

For every 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms) you lose, your HDL may increase by 1 mg/dL (0.03 mmol/L). If you start following your daily exercise routine and choose healthier foods — two other ways to increase your HDL cholesterol — you will more likely be moving towards a healthier weight in the process.

Stop smoking and drinking too much of alcohol

Just stop! If you need some ways for quitting cold turkey – read How To Stop Smoking. If you still think that it’s hard to quit, note, that just 24 hours after quitting, your risk of a heart attack decreases. Within 15 years, your risk of heart disease is similar to someone who never smoked.

Get enough of sleep

Try going to bed no later than 11 p.m. This is when all needed process in your body start taking place and all needed hormones are being released only during your sleep. After 12 a.m they stop.

Medications

There are several types of medication that can help you increase HDL cholesterol. But you should consult your doctor before taking any of it and take exactly as doctor directed. In general, increasing HDL levels should be always supervised by a doctor.

Big Brother All Stars: 100 Percent United Against Malaria!

Malaria has been a burden for many African countries for the past couple of decades. According to statistics, one child dies every thirty seconds from the disease, which also happens to be the largest killer of pregnant women.

Bracelets:United Against Malaria

This week, the Housemates are to align themselves with the fight against Malaria and will be expected to wear their yellow malaria t-shirts as well as wear their Unite Against Malaria bracelets.

Over the course of the week, the Housemates will participate in various Tasks that will educate, entertain and inform Africa about the Malaria scourge.

Beads that Save Lives

Hundreds of years ago, African people fell in love with beads. Beads of all colour and made of glass, seeds and stone and hand-woven into colourful headbands, intricate bangles and earrings, medicine horns and love tokens, are part of Africa’s past – and its future.

A simple string of beads makes up the United Against Malaria bracelet – but the symbol of being part of the effort against malaria in Africa was not always a beaded bracelet.

Initially, it was a blue strip cut from the material which is used for malaria nets and which is also used to pack the nets into bundles of 20. Malaria warriors – the men and women who travel from one African community to the next distributing malaria nets and educating people about malaria prevention and treatment – tied the blue strips around their wrists and those of the people they met as a sign of belonging to a common cause.

Today, by buying the UAM bracelet, individuals and organisations are actually purchasing mosquito nets for millions of people across Africa who cannot afford to buy their own nets.

Mosquito Net

The Mosquito Net, one of the most powerful tools in the prevention of Malaria will be used during various sporting activities.

The Housemates will play a basketball game, treat a Mosquito Net, submit a video clip in which they relate their personal experience with malaria.

The Task will close off with an intelligent discussion themed "The Economic Effects of Malaria."

The Housemates did not hesitate to Wager 100 percent on what looks to be a challenging, but worthwhile Task!
Good luck to the All Stars!

5 Facts About Cholesterol

1. Our body needs cholesterol. Cholesterol in the body is an important substance, which is needed for cell membranes and the production of hormones. But we need to control levels of cholesterol in our body, as with the intake of unhealthy and fat foods we collect too much cholesterol, which our body finds hard to regulate.

2. Where do we get cholesterol? The body makes the cholesterol it needs. The more we “bring” it along with the food the less the body makes it. So, cholesterol levels are controlled automatically. But body stops regulating the process as soon as it is overloaded with fat and carbs.

3. There are 2 main types of cholesterol. As I mentioned previously, cholesterol is needed for our body. It is being transported by lipoproteins. There are low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL). LDL (or “bad” lipoprotein) transports cholesterol from liver to other parts of the body, HDL (or “good” lipoprotein) takes excess cholesterol away and carries it back to the liver to be excreted. These two types of lipids, along with triglycerides and Lp(a) cholesterol, make up your total cholesterol count, which can be determined through a blood test.

4.  Bad cholesterol increases risk of heart diseases. LDL is called a “bad” lipoprotein as carries mostly fat and only a small amount of protein from the liver to other parts of the body. Too much of LDL makes cholesterol level high and is considered as a “bad cholesterol” situation. If there’s too much of LDL it can form clots on the artery walls. A high LDL cholesterol level is considered a risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) because such clots can narrow the arteries lumen and may eventually block blood flow to brain, heart and other parts of the body.

5. Increasing “good” cholesterol can be more helpful than reducing “bad cholesterol”. That is because high levels of HDL (or the “good” lipoprotein) appear to help protect against heart disease. It can remove some of the cholesterol that is already attached to the artery walls by LDL. If you are at risk of heart disease you might be advised to increase levels of “good” cholesterol

In the next post, dedicated to cholesterol, I will write different methods on how to raise HDL level and how do reduce LDL levels.

Breast Cancer Survivor Story: To Blessed to be Stressed!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer June 2007. Today, I am grateful that I was diagnosed early. My decision to have a mastectomy validated when I met with my oncology surgeon. He told me my decision to remove the entire breast was a good one because the pathology report reflected that cancer cells were found throughout the entire breast. God help me make that decision. After pulling myself together with the grace of God 5 months later I was diagnosed with cancer on my left side. I underwent surgery and had a mastectomy on my left breast. After going thru a second mastectomy I knew I had to lean on the Lord up above. I was treated like family from all the hospital that took care of me. They all were a tremendous assistance to my well being. They were friendly, sincere and compassionate everywhere I went. Miami Valley Hospital, Kettering Medical Center, Grandview Hospital, South view Hospital. I just like to say thank to them all.

To my family, friends and coworkers thanks for all of your support and prayers. I'm truly grateful for all the thoughtful and kind things that you all did for me. I am so grateful to have each of you in my life. I was raised on faith and I have always lived my life by faith. I believe that God speaks to all of us. God has guided my steps and decisions since day one. Healing is a package deal on your mind, body and soul and I'm so grateful. I wanted to live to see my kids and grandchild grow up. That's what gave me the drive to fight cancer. You can't fight cancer if you don't have hope and faith. God is good!

Cynthia Johnson

My Observations:
- Early Diagnosis is important.
- It is not an easy decision to remove your breast as a result of cancer {mastectomy}
- It is important to depend on your GOD
- Support from family, friends and colleagues is equally important.
- YOU CAN BEAT BREAST CANCER!!!!!

Erectile Dysfunction: Treatment

The vast majority of men who consult their doctors cure impotence in most of the cases. First of all, doctor must perform tests and find out if it is ED that is disturbing you. ED can be diagnosed after conducting a physical exam or performing lab tests by your doctor. In some cases, ED can be a warning sign of more serious disease, such as a heart condition, which can lead to heart attack, stroke and death from cardiovascular disease. So, all men diagnosed with ED should be evaluated for cardiovascular disease.

After diagnosing ED, doctor will prescribe the most suitable treatment for you choosing from the variety of methods. Such methods include:

Changes in Lifestyle. And this means: stop smoking (and drinking), lose weight, start exercising more often, watch what you eat, keep your blood pressure and sugar levels under control.

Medications. We all know about magic pills like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. These are the ones that will probably be prescribed by your doctor if you both agree with this method of treatment. But ED medication is not a cure, it only takes your symptoms away. Talk over with your doctor about lifestyle changes you must make in order to combine it with medications for curing erectile dysfunction.

Herbal Supplements. Most doctors do not recommend using herbal supplements. Asian ginseng and ginkgo biloba (seen here) are popular, but there isn't a lot of good research on their effectiveness. But if you still want to try it, consult your physician. He will suggest on how to better treat ED when using herbal supplements.

Injecting Medication Directly to Penis. If you want faster method of treatment or then taking oral drugs or oral drugs do not help you sustain strong enough erections, then you might like this one. Injections work faster and work by widening the blood vessels, causing the penis to become engorged with blood. Another option is inserting a medicated pellet into the urethra. The pellet can trigger an erection within 10 minutes.

Vacuum devises for filling penis with blood. Not a very pleasant method of treatment and you might need to work it out with your other half on how to move in bed with it. Vacuum device (or pump) works by placing the penis inside a cylinder. A pump draws air out of the cylinder, creating a partial vacuum around the penis. This causes it to fill with blood, leading to an erection. An elastic band worn around the base of the penis maintains the erection during intercourse.

Surgery. It is not recommended for older men. If you’re young and ED is caused by blockage in artery leading to the penis, then it will help to restore blood flow.

Psychotherapy. When I wrote about causes of ED I covered physical and psychological risk factors. If you and your doctor agreed that ED was caused by stress, misunderstandings in relationship, etc. then you will benefit from psychotherapy. Even if ED has a known physical cause, a therapist can teach you and your partner techniques to reduce anxiety before and improve intimacy during the intercourse.

Your success in treating ED depends on how strong you would like to get rid of it not only by removing its symptoms from your life. The best treatment is avoiding risks that could lead to ED and making needed changes in your lifestyle. Anyways, you and your doctor will be the best judges on how to renovate your sexual abilities. Take care!

BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS

1. No Breakfast!!
People who do not take breakfast have low blood sugar. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.

2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries leading to decrease in mental functioning.

3. Smoking

It causes multiple brain damage and may cause Alzheimer's disease.

4. High Sugar Consumption
Too much sugar will hinder the absorption of protein and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long sleep deprivation will accelerate the death of brain cells.

Spice Up Your Love Life... With Chile Pepper and More

It is hard to keep intimate relationship on the same level and with the same emotions like right after marriage or first night with your partner. To keep it spicy you need to try new things all the time. This will surely take your sex life to another level, maybe even better than the first night as you already have a bag of experience with you. For hot night you can take erectile dysfunction pill to feel something new. But this time I suggest trying healthy foods, which may actually affect hormone levels, brain chemistry, and energy, increasing arousal and sex drive. It is not 100% proved that these foods have aphrodisiac properties, but plenty of evidence suggesting they really help, so why not spice it up tonight.

Some Oysters for Appetizer

Zinc, which oysters are loaded with, helps the body produce testosterone. Research suggests that zinc can improve sperm count and swimming ability, and increase sexual potency in men.

For women, zinc may help ovaries—the source of estrogen, progesterone, and some testosterone—stay healthy, keeping her primed for bedroom action. Plus to all of it oysters have a delicious taste.

Salad with Avocados

Avocados can implement to your sex life by giving you both energy and a healthy libido, which as you know are essential for great hot sex night. They're fully loaded with minerals, monounsaturated fats (the good kind that protect the heart and lower cholesterol), and vitamin B6—all of which help keep your energy and sex drive up. They're also a top source of omega-3 fatty acids, which naturally boost your mood, making you more likely to feel ready for bedroom action.

Salad with Asparagus

Asparagus even by its look gives you a tip on what kind of veggie it is. Well, not only the look, but the inside part as well. It is rich in vitamin B6 and folate, both of which can boost arousal and orgasm. And it also boasts vitamin E, which stimulates sex hormones in both men and women.

Chile Peppers in Your Main Dish

Spice it up! With Chile peppers on your dinner table feeling of euphoria boosts and hotter sex is guaranteed. And it is all thanks to capsaicin, a chemical that's been shown to induce the release of endorphins in the brain

Chocolate for a Dessert

Chocolate and Valentine’s Day is not a coincidence. It contains tryptophan, which helps the body produce serotonin, a natural feel-good chemical that may play a role in sexual arousal. So, leave some chocolate for dessert or even for foreplay.

Licorice Candy

Licorice candy in whips first of all gives you a thought of hot intimacy. Secondly, it mimics the effects of estrogen and progesterone, critical hormones for normal reproductive and sexual function and response. This sexy candy can help settle your mood for the next episode after you dinner.

But don’t buy just any old licorice-flavored candy. Be sure to get a variety that contains real licorice-root extract. Have a great night!

You can always find more interesting information on my Twitter account TimeFoHealth. I will be pleased to follow you back and read your thoughts!
